Prepare when nobody is rushing
An urgent veterinary visit is stressful enough without searching for a carrier, trying to remember medication names, or finding that the car will not accommodate a pet who cannot walk. A small amount of preparation now can make decisions easier when time matters.
Know where you are going
Save the phone number and address of your regular veterinarian and an appropriate local emergency veterinary hospital. Know which facilities are open outside normal hours. If you suspect a medical emergency, call the veterinary hospital for instructions and prioritize prompt veterinary care; do not wait for a nonemergency transportation booking.
Keep essential information together
Maintain an accessible list of your pet’s medications, allergies, relevant medical conditions, regular veterinarian, and emergency contacts. Keep a photo or copy of important records if practical. Bring discharge instructions or relevant specialist information when those may affect handling during transportation.
Prepare the right equipment
Know where the leash, harness, secure carrier, and clean towels are located. If your pet has mobility challenges, ask your veterinary team ahead of time what equipment or handling assistance may be necessary. Do not improvise risky lifting or movement for a pet with suspected spinal injury or severe pain; follow veterinary instructions.
Make a family transportation plan
Decide who can transport your pet, who can communicate with the hospital, and who can help if one person is unavailable. If your pet is too large to lift or your vehicle is unsuitable, research professional options in advance and understand their response times and limits. An emergency transportation plan should never delay immediate veterinary assessment.
How we support urgent transportation needs
The Pet Taxi® offers private pet transportation, including urgent and after-hours requests subject to team availability and the pet’s condition. Our team can discuss vehicle access, mobility equipment, and hospital logistics, but we are not a substitute for veterinary emergency medical services. For time-sensitive needs, call or text us directly rather than submitting a routine online request.
The takeaway
When minutes matter, familiarity helps: know the hospital, locate the essentials, and know how your pet will travel safely.
