Moving Out of State With Your Pet? What to Know About Private Pet Transport

Door-to-Door Ramp Assistance

Do we transport pets across state lines?

We receive this question often. The Pet Taxi® provides private transportation within Florida, but we do not offer out-of-state moving or interstate pet relocation service. We would rather give families clear guidance than accept a trip that falls outside our service model.

Choose a private journey designed for your pet

For an interstate move, we encourage owners to look for an established commercial pet transport business offering a dedicated, private trip planned around their pet. Ask who will actually travel with the animal, whether other animals will share the vehicle, how rest and relief breaks are handled, what happens if plans change, and how updates will be provided. We prefer a customized itinerary rather than an anonymous, multi-pet relay.

Check registration and insurance

USDA APHIS regulates covered businesses transporting animals for hire under the Animal Welfare Act. Ask any prospective interstate transporter whether their activities require USDA APHIS registration and request the relevant registration information. Also ask for evidence of appropriate commercial insurance and clarify what protection applies while the animal is in the provider’s custody. A registration or insurance claim should be independently verified; neither is a guarantee of quality on its own.

Ask for a written transportation plan

Before booking, request a written explanation of pickup and delivery arrangements, identification and restraint of the pet, climate-control practices, emergency procedures, driver communication, overnight accommodations where applicable, and how medical or mobility needs will be managed. If your pet is elderly, recovering from surgery or anxious, discuss these circumstances before accepting a quote.

Health certificates and state-entry rules

Interstate pet travel requirements are established by the destination state and may include a certificate of veterinary inspection or health certificate, current rabies documentation, identification, vaccination records or other requirements. Not every state and type of trip has the same rules. Contact your veterinarian and the destination state animal-health authority well ahead of travel. USDA APHIS provides state-to-state guidance but does not routinely endorse domestic interstate pet health certificates.

Plan before moving week

Collect veterinary records, medication instructions, an appropriately sized carrier or restraint, identification and updated contact information. Confirm the exact pickup and delivery contacts and keep veterinary information available throughout the move. Avoid last-minute decisions about sedatives or special handling without your veterinarian’s advice.

Questions? We are happy to point you in the right direction

Although The Pet Taxi® does not provide interstate relocation, families are welcome to call or text us at 561-437-1010 with general questions about what to look for in a pet transportation provider. If the journey is entirely within Florida, we can discuss our private, door-to-door transportation options.
