Cats Are Not Small Dogs: Why Getting Them Into the Car Requires a Different Plan

Veterinary Visit Transport

The trip begins before the car

For many cats, the difficult part of a veterinary appointment starts when the carrier comes out. A cat who has rarely traveled may disappear under furniture, resist entering the carrier, or become distressed before anyone reaches the driveway. A thoughtful travel routine can help make necessary care more manageable.

Make the carrier ordinary

If possible, leave the carrier in a familiar room between appointments. Place a comfortable washable blanket inside and allow the cat to investigate it without pressure. Rewards and calm practice sessions can help. Choose a secure, well-ventilated carrier that allows appropriate positioning and safe handling; a top-opening carrier may be helpful for some cats.

Plan for safety, not escape

A frightened cat can move unexpectedly fast. Keep doors, windows, and carrier latches secure during loading and unloading. Do not open the carrier outdoors or inside an unsecured vehicle. During travel, place and secure the carrier according to its design and the veterinarian’s recommendations so it cannot slide or tip.

Reduce unnecessary stimulation

Cats may find unfamiliar sounds, strong odors, sudden motion, or the presence of other animals stressful. A quiet, climate-controlled vehicle, smooth handling, and a familiar-smelling blanket may help. Ask your veterinary team whether a carrier cover or other stress-reduction measures are appropriate. Never give sedatives or calming medications without veterinary direction.

Consider the appointment from start to finish

If you cannot leave work, do not drive, or have difficulty handling the carrier, think through who will take your cat inside the clinic, communicate instructions, and bring them home. If an appointment chaperone is needed, coordinate in advance with the veterinary office and the transportation provider.

Private transportation for cats

The Pet Taxi® provides private, door-to-door pet transportation, including cat transport for veterinary visits and other approved destinations. We transport one family’s pets at a time—without unrelated animals sharing the ride—and can discuss carrier preferences, handling needs, appointment accompaniment, and return transportation before booking.

The takeaway

A cat’s journey is not simply a smaller version of a dog’s. The right carrier, predictable handling, and a carefully planned handoff can make a significant difference.
